Serving New Jersey

Teams of NESC Consultants for several decades have been helping New Jersey nonprofits, educational institutions and local, county and state government entities. In addition, the NESC New Jersey Region has been selected by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and others to assist their designated grantees and agencies.

Though active primarily in North and Central New Jersey, NESC works closely with a similar organization to serve clients and programs in South Jersey. Other important New Jersey NESC partners are North Brunswick-based Center for Nonprofits and the Parsippany-based Pro Bono Partnership.

How NESC Helps New Jersey Nonprofits

Board Mentoring.
Called in by the Executive Board of the Child Placement Advisory Council of the State of New Jersey to improve operations of the board, NESC mentored the Board’s leaders, resulting in a 288% improvement in board effectiveness in five critical areas: Clear and shared mission; Openness to new ideas and adaptability; Effective collaboration and communication practices; Effective and engaged leadership; and High standards and expectations.

Advising a church.

Seeking to boost fundraising and greater community involvement in his Ujima Ministries, Inc., Pastor John Norwood turned to NESC. An NESC Consultant worked with the pastor to form an Advisory Council of community leaders to advise the pastor and help him raise funds.

Mentoring & Coaching.

An NESC Team mentored executives of several Morris County nonprofit agencies to help them collaborate on serving the county’s immigrant populations. In another project, an NESC Consultant coached the new executive director of a religious organization and, in another, a Consultant mentored the building superintendent of a Senior Citizens housing complex, on facilities maintenance activities.

Helping a Bookkeeper.
An NESC Consultant worked with a nonprofit’s bookkeeper to improve financial reporting and controls.

Facilities Management.

Faced with mounting costs and other problems in building its new headquarters, SAGE, Inc. called on NESC, whose Consultants reviewed building plans, recommended ways to cut costs and manage the project budget and then monitored subcontractors’ bids.

Strategic Planning.
NESC, over the years, has designed three separate strategic and business plans for a health care agency, after which NESC Consultants helped the agency’s executives execute the plans.

Marketing Strategy.

NESC consultants crafted a marketing strategy that enabled the Independent College Fund of New Jersey to boost contributions from current donors and add new contributors. In addition to increasing the number of contributions from New Jersey’s top 100 employers by 66% in the first year, the Fund’s donor base jumped 18%, while contributions climbed 10%.

Retreat for a State Government Department.

An NESC Team ran a retreat for executives and key staffers of a New Jersey State-level department, which prodded attendees to identify effective ways to reorganize their department’s activities.

Staff Structure & Salaries.

NESC consultants helped executives of the Borough of Franklin Lakes develop a new staff organization chart and salary guide and update its job descriptions

Across-the-Board Assistance.

NESC helped an environmental group’s Board develop a succession plan for the Executive Director, a plan for a pending move to a new headquarters and strategies for increasing fundraising.
